TURKEY QUAKE ZONE- VIDEO COMMENTARY

Turkey is a very quake prone country. Turkey has been exposed to many earthquakes in the past and met many casualties. The area of eastern turkey where Sunday’s earthquake struck is one of the most seismically active areas of this world.

This video is very informative. Johanna Wagstaffe, seismologist explains that turkey is located on the Anatolian plate which is constantly bumping and grinding with the Arabian plate to the South, What happened on Sunday was that two plates slide beside each other which is called Transform Fault and a quake of 7.2 was produced. The video also provided maps as well as graph which gave excellent support for viewers to easily understand the situation.

The video also gave historical background.  Johanna gives a lot of historical details about earthquakes and also explained with depth that 15 earthquakes of this magnitude occur every year and in unpopulated areas.  She also tells that its aftershocks are extremely strong will continue for months. People are in trouble.  That highlights the seriousness of the situation and creates awareness about it. Through the video, viewers will know about the happening and will want to help. Overall, I feel this video was shot very professional and serves the purpose to create awareness and provide viewers with information.

ELECTION REFLECTION

Election Day was a very exciting day for many Canadians. On October 6, the decision for the next premier was about to be made. There was great hustle everywhere. People were busy casting votes and supporting their favourite candidates. My group was covering Guelph Riding and we were excited to be able to cover and record interviews from the candidates there.

The interaction among our group was very good. Olivia had already decided to cover Guelph ridings. There were seven candidates in our riding contesting for elections. Three of the candidates were from the big parties such as The Liberals, the PC and the N.D.P. One was from the Libertarian Party, the other from Independent party and another was from the Green Party. The last candidate was from the Communist Party.

We first prepared an outline and then wrote a voice over script. Then we identified the respective shots for Guelph Ridings. Overall, it was a good team effort. Our source was Guelph-Mercury for news updates as well as 570 News. We also used the Forum for discussion of Election issues.

We decided to conduct interviews from the. During the whole process, we remained alert and did our work. We planned and wrote down all the relevant question if we could possibly get an interview from the winning candidate. We continuously surfed the web for election updates for our ridings and called the managers for further details on elections.

We did not have any conflicts among us but we didn’t know how we were going to cover the election. We weren’t clear on what equipment we were to use on the final day but later on, it as clarified that we would be using IMacs. Once the technical problems were cleared, we go to work.

As it was my first time covering the election, I didn’t know much so I learned a lot. I learned things such as how do you get information about your riding? What equipment is needed? How do you write scripts and prepare interview questions? How do you shoot and record your reporter? All of this information must be ready before proceeding. Are you working for online news or just broadcast TV recordings? You should have all your gadgets well prepared.

When we reached Guelph at Country Club, the campaign office of the Liberal candidate, we could not get internet line so we had to move on to James Gordon’s campaign office. There we were able to get a connection and were able to successfully live throw report as well as record the updates. Finally, we recorded an interview of James Gordon and it was sent live throw. Overall, it was a good learning experience as a team.

WEEK SEVEN SUBMISSION COMPLETED (SHAHID MALIK)

My first blog entry was about the story from Globe and Mail about the occupy movement in Canada . It is titled, “Occupy Movement ”

My second blog post was about the video covering the news of the Ottawa clinic health incident. It is titled, ” Infection scare in Ottawa”.

For my last post, I commented on Bridget Parker’s Miss Representation idea.

COMMENT ON BRIDGET PARKER’S: MISS REPRESENTATION

I completely agree with you on the issue that women are being misrepresented in the media. I have seen that Miss representation trailer video and according to the statistics given by that video, women make up half of our population while only a slight percentage has become congress or democrats members. Media doesn’t show the problems rendered by women in war, politics and healthcare. It doesn’t focus on the sacrifices of women as wives, mothers and sisters but rather shows the physical attributes of women. It should concentrate on the strong roles that women have taken on in every field like teaching, medicine and healthcare along with influencing and bringing up a family. Media has promoted women only as a symbol of sex. You have picked a very good topic and I fully agree with your thoughts that media should focus on the inner qualities of women and show them as a equal.

INFECTION SCARE IN OTTAWA

I watched the video on the above topic which really terrifies me. In the video, the Ottawa Medical Officer, Dr. Isra, explains the negligence and lapses in the cleanliness protocol made by Dr. Christiane Farazli in her clinic. Dr. Farazli is a gastro entrologist and she does endoscopy most of the time but was unable to maintain proper hygienic procedures needed for sterilization of the apparatus. A team from the Ontario College of Physicians and surgeons once visited the clinic and found the apparatus unhealthy and not properly sterilized.  They concluded that the patient might be infected by Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV. According to them, Dr. Isra transmitted microorganisms from one patient to another, completely unsanitary.  The ministry is now sending warning letters to nearly 7000 patients that they have to get a blood test.

I found this completely shocking because I didn’t think it could happen in Canada. It definitely made me aware about the hygiene factor that is in clinics.

As for the video shooting, I think it was just average, not highly effective. The video was created to make people aware of the health concern. In the video, much of the time, Dr. Isra speaks about this issue.  That really gives the viewer the information about the issue. They could have also shown some shots of the evidence of the poor hygiene standards. The video should also have showed the shot of the clinic and included comment from another doctor.  They should also have had more narrations than the interview. I felt as if it dragged on too long.

OCCUPY MOVEMENT

I read this article and began to think over the success of this protest. The “Occupy Movement” started in New York and has spread like fire in many different countries without any planning. That is extremely surprising.  This movement is now known as the Renaissance 2011.

Even in Canada, the people have been inspired to take part in this movement. A large number of people have come out in the three main cities, Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver to support this cause. Though the protest is very peaceful and organized, the people have blocked many areas, including the busy downtown roads at Dundas and Young. In James Park, people have brought out their tents. They are so motivated by this that they even went as far as sleeping in the cold night. The Torontonians are definitely giving this movement a new face. They displayed their placard and signs in a very organized manner, stating the vital issues, one of them being the corporate greed meaning humans come before profit. Another issue was the gap that seems to be widening between the rich and the poor and lastly, the social inequality that is blooming.  According to many, the employers are neglecting human values.

This movement helped create awareness among employers and CEOs of manufacturing units to care more for human values rather than the profit. I completely agree with this movement because recently, a lot of these issues seem to be rising. There is a cut of education, on jobs as well as higher taxes and hydro bills. No respect for human being is being showed but rather an era of capitalism is approaching.

I want to highlight and record this issue from a humanist approach. Interviews will be conducted with C.E.Os., manufacturing unit workers and employers. I will also get opinions from the protesters as well as general public.

WEEK SIX SUBMISSION COMPLETED (SHAHID MALIK)

My first blog entry was about the story from Globe and Mail about the research on multivitamins . It is titled, “Multivitamins linked to earlier death?! ”

My second blog post was about the CBC video covering the news of York University Drill accident. It is titled, ” York University Drill result on death and injuries”.

For my last post, I re blogged Caitlin Henshaw’s blog and commented on it. The post called “Story Idea: I am not a machine, I am your cashier”.

Caitlin's Blog: Story Idea: I am not a machine, I am your cashier

caitlinhenshaw:

I am not a machine. I am a human being. I have friends, family and life goals. Though you may not know my name, I do have one. I am your cashier.

Sadly, there are people in this world who only see a cashier as a warm blooded ATM. They do not look at you. They do not respond verbally to…

Crucial topic that should be definitely discussed with depth. I appreciate it because personally I have worked as a cashier and faced this problem many times. It may not seem like a big deal to many but it is. It really upsets me to see it happen. When you are treating someone with politeness, even if it is for the job, it should be given back. People nowadays do not realize that because they are too busy with their modern lives. Even if life in this society is getting busier, people should still have those old life values. Respect and politeness is a big one that shouldn’t ever be forgotten.  Yet costumers continue to jabber on their phones rather than giving their attention to the person that is present in front of them. It really disgusts me to see someone being so rude.  In their opinion, everyone behind that cash register becomes inhuman.

I think you had chosen a very good topic to cover. It’s hard to believe this exchange happens because of cellphones. Such kind of discussions might help the relationship between the costumers and the cashiers. Your article was well- written and highlighted all the issues. Well- done.

YORK UNIVERSITY DRILL RESULTS IN DEATH AND INJURIES

This news really made me really sad. I watched the video shocked and stunned. It’s way too often that these accidents are happening.  At York University, a construction worker was crushed to death while five were injured when a drilling rig collapsed. Reasons for the collapse are unknown and the Ontario Ministry is still investigating.

The video was shot in an impressive manner. The reporter answered many questions that the audience probably had. It was an extremely detailed video. The story could easily be understood through the video. Not only that but the shots included were very good. In addition, the anchor had a clear voice and was easy to understand. Also the interviews conducted gave the viewer more information and insight. During the video, the presenter highlighted the important issue of the safety in construction sites. I also liked that the video informed us of the affects that this event would have on the TTC subway development. Giving the future affects really explains the significance of the story to the viewer.

Even so, I felt as if the video was kind of moved away from the main focus, which was the death of the man and lack of safety in construction sites.  Overall though, it was a very informative video that told us about another arising issue in Ontario.

MULTIVITAMINS LINKED TO EARLIER DEATH?!

People take multivitamins daily because they believe it benefits their health but according to the article on The Globe and Mail they actually lead to earlier death.  The article states that the studies of University of Minnesota show that the vitamin supplements do not improve your health. According to the research, only calcium supplements were linked to a lower death risk.  This study was conducted for women only but is also applied towards men. It is concluded that multivitamins do not exactly harm your body but do not benefit it either.

I could not believe this. These days, human beings have become a prey in the hands of medical science, doctors and researchers. Earlier studies suggested that vitamin pills improve your health so people began taking them. Now the recent research shows that taking these pills could be dangerous and are far from beneficial.  I honestly don’t know whom we should trust.

This article proves that we should stick to natural foods rather than taking supplements. This includes fruits and vegetables because both are a rich source of vitamins and nutrients. They are the healthiest choice for gaining vitamins.

I want to record this article from the angle: Should we continue to trust the medical research even after this? I want to highlight the alarming side effects of the multivitamins and create awareness. Interviews will be conducted from people taking vitamin pills and if possible, the health professionals and the study author, Jaakko Mursu.
